DVDery: A Mind-Boggling ‘Illusionist’

Surprising audiences and critics with its twist ending and sleeper hit status, The Illusionist earns its place as my recommendation for the week. Edward Norton stars as Eisenheim, a renowned magician in early 20th century Vienna, who falls in love with the beautiful Duchess Sophie (Jessica Biel), a woman destined for a higher place as wife to Crown Prince Leopold (Rufus Sewell). After word of Eisenheim’s interest in the duchess reaches the less-than-reputable prince, Leopold assigns Chief Inspector Uhl (Paul Giamatti) to investigate the legitimacy of Eisenheim’s craft and the nature of his intentions toward Sophie. But Eisenheim, like any magician worth his salt, has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Be sure to put The Illusionist at the top of your queue.
