Finally Lost is moving forward, but to what end? The charming series about a group of castaways learning to survive on a dangerous island is gone. In Season 1, when faith ruled over science, there seemed to be a divine plan. Each survivor with his or her peculiar talent had been taken from an unhappy life in the real world, and brought to the island to save it from an evil, or even to save the world from the island itself. It looked like Heroes before there was a Heroes. And like Locke, we the audience had faith that the writers had a divine plan for the series.

But towards the end of the Season 2, our faith wavered. Suddenly the show had an improvisation feel. Characters were introduced with bravado, then easily killed off. Reports that the writers were getting story ideas from bloggers did nothing to comfort us. Ultimately, science beat faith down in the season finale with its complicated explanations of electromagnetism and bypass keys. The supernatural wonder of the show was dead. Now we’re trapped in the third season with its empty aquariums and polar bear cages (wait, didn’t Walt imagine the polar bears onto the island!). The writers are so sure we want answer to questions. What I need is a purpose for the castaways. They’ve spent too many episodes convincing me nothing is random to have it all be a pointless accident.

General Hospital
Port Charles is currently embroiled in a hostage plot reminiscent of 24, Die Hard, and defunct The Nine. While poor production values and a lack of rehearsal time is always the reality for daytime soaps, this level of tension and drama hasn’t been seen on the show for three years since the Port Charles Hotel burned down. Intern Dr. Emily performs makeshift surgery on a fellow hostage at gunpoint with duct tape and a paring knife, while Jason crawls through the air ducts, and Alcazar, the man with the code to the briefcase central to the crisis, has lost his memory. They cleaned out some of the cast in the PC Hotel fire, and with the amount of automatic weapons and explosives in this storyline, a few characters are bound to get eliminated this time around as well.
