What’s In the Spotlight

My husband makes this noise with his teeth and lower lip when something presented with a lot of bravado ends up being lame. It sounds like an almost-fart. If it were a word, it would be “ferp”.

Now ask me what I thought of the final episode of The O.C.

Ferp.

The show skipped ahead to six months after the earthquake, but the events that happened in those six months (Ryan and Taylor breaking up, Julie getting pregnant and leaving Frank) would have been much more interesting to watch than this A Very Brady-esque episode. Utterly untrue to the spirit of the series, void of scheming and fist fights, it featured Kirsten giving birth and no Julie Cooper Nichols Roberts wedding. Every effort made to enhance the wackiness (Bullet’s 12 cowboy sons named after Texas cities, a gay couple who happen to be a midwife and wedding planner) made it seem more contrived. Perhaps the announcement of the show’s cancellation was as much of a surprise to the writers as it was to us.

I’m in favor of pretending episodes like this never happened. I say The O.C. officially ended a week earlier when everyone left the hospital together, overjoyed to be alive. I have no interest in moving the Cohens to Berkeley, so the house was never destroyed, and they all live happily ever after in Newport Beach. That’s my story, and I think we all should stick to it.

What They Said

Yo. Remember that email we got from those Nigerians that needed our help getting all that money out of Africa? We did it! I got the check today…I would’ve been happy if our reward was just helping that dethroned prince of Nigeria, but this is great.”
Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock

What They Played

Because the soundtrack pick of the week will never again be from this hit-maker, this week’s pick is the theme to The O.C. In an era when the TV theme song is nearly dead, this is one of the greatest of all time. Phantom Planet’s “California” is available on iTunes.

Primetime Index

While 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights edged upward, a slight loss from Lost and a major plummet from The O.C. dragged the Index Average down from 7.33 to 7.00.
