What’s In the Spotlight

The ratings for Friday Night Lights have been consistently poor, which makes no sense, because this show has something for everyone. It has suspenseful football action scenes that rival those from Remember the Titans, Any Given Sunday, and, of course, the movie on which the series is based. It has beautiful people kissing each other. It has beautiful people punching each other. It has the entirely unique storyline of a star athlete discovering what it means to be paraplegic after being injured on the field. But mostly, it’s a compelling series that explores some of the complexities of American life such as race relations and poverty.

This week FNL aired its season finale, and I couldn’t help wondering if the uncertainty of the show’s future affected decisions about its plot. Had they been assured a second season, would they have already had the Dillon Panthers win the state championship? Where do they go from there?

Still there’s good news and bad. The good news is despite the abysmal ratings, NBC has ordered new episodes for the fall, so Coach Taylor can figure out how to get out of his job at TMU. However, the bad news is they’ve ordered only six episodes. So here’s my plea to television fans everywhere: go out and buy the first season DVD when it’s released this summer. Watch it, love it, and lend it to everyone you know. Then in September tune in. The ratings will take off, and NBC can confidently order the full second season.

What They Said

Uh, what’s up your caboodle? […] Oh, it’s a new word I’m trying out to replace ‘ass’. I have loose morals, and I’m living in sin, so…still hoping that not being a potty mouth will get me into heaven.”
Elliot on Scrubs

What They Played

The soundtrack pick of the week is from the eagerly anticipated return of Entourage – OutKast’s “B.O.B.” is available on iTunes.

Primetime Index

A poor score for How I Met Your Mother drags the index average down from 7.67 to 7.43.
